Sometimes referred to as a "simplified Bambara" or a "commercial Bambara," Dioula (also spelled "Jula" or "Dyula") has been likened to a relationship similar to American English to British English. While some argue that Dioula, Bambara, and Malinke are interchangeable terms, with Dioula mainly used in Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso and Bambara and Malinke more common in Mali, linguists categorize them as distinct but closely related languages within the Mandé group.

For many speakers in southwestern Burkina Faso, Dioula is not their mother tongue but is commonly spoken in everyday life when interacting with individuals from diverse ethnic groups.
